The Luberon wild ? Indeed
Nature reigns here, protected by the mountain, staunchly defended by armies of stone and
the steady flow of the rivers. Yet, when you strike out into these amazing landscapes, you
enter into history, you feel the history wich has been witnessed by the warm stone of the
age-old villages, clinging to the hillside between heaven and earth. You sense the culture
which has taken root and flourished here. There, deyfying the laws of equilibrium atop the
rocky spurs, or nestled into the folds of the hills, amazing villages, radiating their art
of living, overlook the plains.

Between
Heaven and Earth
Masterpieces of imagination and daring,
the perched villages in the Luberon have retained all the riches from medieval times. The
stone walls themselves are works of the stonemason's art, the red tiled roofs ripple like
a shower of light. In the winding labyrinth of the interlaced streets, each step reveals a
new mystery, a massive old door, a carriage entrance behind which lies a noble dwelling, a
secret alcove, the portrait of a saint. Graceful belfries ring the hour from valley to
valley, echoing and answering each other. Elsewhere, let time fly. Here it remains
suspended... Hours flow like the water in the fountains, the sun drenches life with a
fragrance of eternity. Shepherds' simple huts or splendid castles, buildings here all
possess the same pride, and work together to create the beauty and harmony which radiate
from these unique villages.

Ocre Cliffs
|
The ochre lodes in the Luberon are among the richest in the world, due to their variety,
their quality and the yield. Some of the sites are the only remaining operational sites in
the entire world. Ochre in the Luberon is a colourful story of past and present. An entire
industry grew up around these fiery lands, stimulating many fields of activity such as
painting, décoration, pottery and construction. Today there are many discovery paths and
sites to visit.
