and the Comtat Venaissin_______
| Avignon, is at the crossroads of Provence and Languedoc,
near the Mediterranean on a route between Italy and Spain. This city of art was the centre
of Christianity in the 14th century and its greatest monuments were recently classified as
part of UNESCO' s World Heritage. Avignon festival. created in 1947 by Jean
Vilar. has become a world wide meeting place of living entertainment. Because of its past,
its heritage, and its cultural life, Avignon has being named European city of Culture for
the Year 2000. |

Le Pont Saint-Bénézet et le Palais des Papes

The Palace of the Popes is the symbol of the Church's influence over the Western world during the
14th century. Built in less than 20 years starting in 1335, the palace is primarily the
work of two popes, Benedict XII and his successor, Clement VI.
Today their work is the biggest existing Gothic Palace in the world.
The splendour of the Pontifical Court comes to life as you discover over 25 rooms,
including the ceremonial rooms, the audience halls, the chapels and the private
apartments, with the frescoes painted by Matteo Giovannetti and other artists. |

Comtat Venaissin
This was the ancient country of France, between the Rhône, the Durance and Mont Ventoux,
and extended out over the fertile plains of the Vaucluse. In 1274, Philippe III le Hardi
ceded Le Comtat to Pope Gregory X. On 14 Sept 1792, the territory was reunited with
France. The Comtat's capital was Carpentras.

L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue
Among the Provençal towns of arts and festivals, l'Isle holds a major part.
The town is the greatest province centre for the professional market of antiques;
a centre at the level of Europe.
Situated at a privileged crossroads in the heart of the Comtat, l'Isle has a long had a
tradition as a stopping place and as a place to have a stay.It is a great point of

Small Provençal town where the influence of Rome can still be seen. Vaison has the
advantage of being right in the middle of an agricultural region, where vines, fruit and
mountain produce make it a prosperous trading centre. |
Le Mont Ventoux
The Mont Ventoux is a 1910-m high conical peak that's visible from far
across the surrounding countryside. With its altitude and the cooling Mistral from the
north, it's often snow-capped in April, while the cherry orchards below are in blossom and
the fields are turning green The view from the top is truly magnificent, especially if a
Mistral has cleared the air.
